Odd news from around the world

Man flies to China to meet his online girlfriend — but spends 10 days at the airport waiting for her: “A DUTCHMAN has been taken to hospital with exhaustion after waiting ten days for his date to turn up. According to The Sun, Alexander Pieter Cirk, 41, flew all the way to Changsha, China, to meet his online girlfriend Zhang for the first time. But when the 26-year-old failed to show up at the airport, Cirk waited patiently in the terminal for a week and a half. After news of love-struck Cirk’s ordeal went viral, Chinese TV channel Hunan got in touch with his no-show would-be lover. According to CCTV News, she said he told her he was coming to China but that she thought it was a joke. She said: “We had advanced our romantic relationship but later he seemed a little callous toward me. “One day he sent me a photo of air tickets abruptly and I thought it was a joke. He didn’t contact me later.” And when her online boyfriend arrived and tried to message her, she was offline because she had travelled to another city for plastic surgery. Heartbroken Cirk booked his return ticket to the Netherlands and was due to travel back home after being released from hospital”

Viking burial site in Denmark contained a warrior — and his enormous axe: “IT seems there’s some truth in the myths after all. Archaeologists in Denmark have found the burial site of a Viking ‘berserker’ warrior — complete with an oversized battle axe. Like the iconic horns on their helmets, the image of a raging Viking wading through his enemies with an enormous axe has long been regarded as the product of overactive artistic imaginations. Now it appears not. One of the biggest Viking axes ever has been found inside a recently excavated dødehuse (death house) in south west Denmark, a type of tomb with separate timber ‘rooms’. It was the sole possession found among the bones of a particularly strong man. “It’s a very large axe and would have been a formidable weapon,” says excavation leader Kirsten Nelleman Nielsen. “People across Europe feared this type of axe, which at the time was known as the Dane Axe — something like the ‘machine gun’ of the Viking Age.”

The ‘BBQ gene’: Early humans evolved to tolerate smoke so they could cook on an open fire: “A gene that allowed humans to tolerate smoke from campfires may have sparked an evolutionary advantage over Neanderthals, scientists believe. US researchers have pinpointed a genetic mutation that increases tolerance to the toxins in smoke. Only found in humans, it makes it easier for us to breakdown polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and other poisons that can harm breathing and damage fertility. At high concentrations, the smoke-derived toxins can increase the risk of respiratory infections and the chance of infant mortality in expectant mothers. The researchers believe a difference in the aryl hydrocarbon receptor, which regulates the body’s response to the toxins, may explain why humans are desensitised to certain smoke toxins and Neanderthals were not. There is evidence that both humans and Neanderthals used fire, according to George Perry, assistant professor of anthropology and biology at the university”

Flossing is a waste of time: New study claims is doesn’t help prevent gum disease and cavities: “Time and time again dentists tell us to floss to protect our teeth. In fact, there is little proof flossing actually works, an investigation has revealed. A review of the latest evidence showed the idea that floss can clean teeth or protect the gums is ‘weak’ and ‘inconclusive’. In fact, other studies show it can actually damage health, causing harmful bacteria to dislodge from in between the teeth and enter into the bloodstream. The US Government has recommended flossing in its official guidelines since 1979. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans must be based on scientific evidence by law. But an investigation by Associated Press (AP) unveiled there was no evidence-base for the flossing recommendation. When the Government issued its latest dietary guidelines this year, the flossing recommendation had been removed, without notice”

Incredible moment toddler ducks just in time to avoid being run over by a reversing truck on a Chinese road: “A quick-thinking toddler managed to avoid being run over by a reversing truck. The truck was reversing and appears not to have seen the child when it speeds up, as seen in a video posted by the People’s Daily Online. The child can be seen looking ahead and moving around when the truck suddenly appears. It reverses fast into a space while it appears unclear what has happened to the child. The child then reappears lying on the ground. The toddler then gets up and can be seen running away”
