A Japanese Haka??: “The students of Tokyo’s Tokyo’s Ikubunkan school kapa haka group performed for rōpū Māori during a trade visit. The students had spent a year on exchange to New Zealand and taught themselves both the haka and waiata when they went home. It begins with a large group of girls singing in unison and shaking their fingers. A leader makes loud calls throughout the song and the other singers reply in song. Their second song is more active and includes well synchronised dance moves and foot tapping. As the girls finish the boys come through the centre of the crowd. They organise themselves into a triangle shape team on the floor with their feet set wide and menacing looks on their faces. The calls for the haka are made from a boy in the middle of the crowd. The boys slap their wrists and sides in perfect unison. Then they call out the words of the haka together. The Maori who commented on the post were thrilled with the high quality of the performance”
