THE NEWS

Odd news from around the world

Huge shark lunges at a woman’s leg as she zooms past on her jet ski: “A woman has captured the terrifying moment a huge bronze whaler shark lunged at her leg when while she was jet skiing at a popular tourist island. The Hervey Bay local was exploring the western side of Fraser Island off Queensland’s eastern coast with her partner on Sunday morning when she noticed the predator gliding through the water. The shark, which appeared to be close to four metres long, slowly circled the pair before thrusting out of the water and latching on to the couple’s jet ski. ‘So this just happened. I literally had to move my leg so it didn’t get mauled!,’ she wrote. The bronze whaler shark, also known as the copper shark, is not typically known for acting aggressively towards humans. It is, however, a strong and powerful mammal that will attack humans if provoked or in the presence of food. [Did some idiot journalist just call a fish a mammal?]

Hunters Kill Huge 780-Pound Alligator That Was Feasting on Cows: “A monster-sized alligator was hunted down and killed in Florida after several cows were eaten. The mammoth reptile measured more than 13 feet and weighed 780 pounds (353kgs). A professional hunter posted photos on Facebook of his jaw-dropping catch, which was hoisted by a tractor. Some wondered if the behemoth alligator was real. “It’s definitely real,” David Mizejewski, of the National Geographic Channel, told IE.

Couple getting hitched after meeting in pub stunned to realise they went to primary school together: “A couple who are getting married were stunned to discover they went to primary school together – and only found out when they looked at an old class photo. Amazed Lucy Wilson, 26, and Lewis Ball, 25, have been together for four years – but didn’t realise they’ve known each other far longer. The couple of Corby, Northants., started dating in 2012 – but recently a chance look at an old school photo revealed they had been in the same class. The image showed them both at Stanion primary but Lewis later moved to a different school and they both totally forgot about each other. They are now engaged – after Lewis took her back to their old school and proposed outside”

Young guy picks the wrong gal: “A young man who groped a woman while she was out running ended up being tackled to the ground when it turned out his victim was a competitive kickboxer and triathlete. Renee Ker had been out running in Cairns early in the morning when a male, believed to be aged between 15 and 17, rode up behind her on his bike and grabbed her late last week. Ms Ker, who is a former competitive kickboxer and now represents New Zealand in triathlons, said she ‘saw red’ and instinctively started to chase him. ‘He rode up behind me and grabbed my backside and slipped his hands between my legs,’ Ms Ker told Daily Mail Australia. ‘I took off after him because I’m an ex-kickboxer. I launched into him and knocked him off his bike. ‘I was about to punch him before I realised he was quite young.’ Ms Ker said she screamed for help because it was the one day she didn’t take her phone but her attacker broke loose and fled before anyone arrived. He left behind his bike, helmet and hat”

Where’s the duck?: “A statue of railway engineer Sir Nigel Gresley has ruffled a few feathers – because it did not include a duck at the designer’s feet. A mallard was originally included as Sir Nigel enjoyed breeding water fowl and trains he designed – including ‘Mallard’ – were named after birds. But the bird was missing when the statue was unveiled at London King’s Cross station today because his family, and others, were not keen on its inclusion. The row prompted several people to bring rubber ducks to the unveiling in protest at the decision not to include the bird with the statue. The Greasley Society Trust, which commissioned the statue, changed the original design because two of his grandsons thought the duck was ‘demeaning’. The decision to remove the duck divided the Trust, and the previous vice-chairman, Andrew Dow, resigned in protest. More than 3,200 people signed a petition calling for the duck to be reinstated”
