THE NEWS

Odd news from around the world

Female viagra only adds one satisfying sexual encounter a month: “Last year the Food and Drug Administration approved the drug, flibanserin, making it the first drug in the US available to treat low sexual desire in women. It was promoted vigorously by a group of women’s rights activists who argued it was unfair that men had numerous drugs to boost sexual function while women had nothing. They concluded that treatment with flibanserin, now marketed as Addyi, resulted in “one-half of an additional sexually satisfying encounter per month”. That result was not very different from the original findings of three clinical trials submitted to the FDA as support for the drug’s approval. Those trials found that once women started taking the drug, they had an average of about one additional satisfying sexual encounter a month, on top of the two to three they were having already.

A strangely popular ad: “A business infomercial showing the process oil refineries go through when they need to make repairs may not sound like the kind of thing that would go viral. But a clip that first appeared online in 2012 presenting exactly this has been picked up on Reddit and is rapidly accumulating thousands of views. The presenter of the EPCM-psi commercial – a firm that project manages, consults and helps companies plan turnarounds – appears to be the reason for its popularity. Dressed in particularly tight clothes, Juliana Morgan – the face of the infomercial – outlines exactly what EPCM-psi do. The glamorous presenter is very animated in her delivery and explains the process of a turnaround alongside some rather dull words that appear next to her on the screen.

Company reveals plans to offer ‘period leave’ to women EVERY month – to create a ‘happier’ work environment: “A UK company is set to create a ‘period policy’ to give long-suffering women time off work during their monthly cycle. The new initiative aims to tap into female staff’s ‘natural rhythms’ in order to create a happier and more productive work environment – and it could be a UK first. Company director Bex Baxter, who employs 31 staff – seven male – at the social community group Coexist, wants to change the stigma around ‘women’s issues’. Bex, 40, said: ‘I have managed many female members of staff over the years and I have seen women at work who are bent over double because of the pain caused by their periods. ‘Despite this, they feel they cannot go home because they do not class themselves as unwell. ‘And this is unfair. At Coexist we are very understanding. If someone is in pain – no matter what kind – they are encouraged to go home.

A Royal book review: “A would-be author who couldn’t get a publishing deal for her picture book has finally landed a glowing review – from Her Majesty the Queen. Kate Chapman, 37, who lives near Spalding, Lincolnshire, came up with her idea for a children’s story about the monarch called Where’s My Crown?, during family days out at Sandringham and Buckingham Palace. Yet despite sending her manuscript to several agents and publishers, the mum-of-two failed to garner any interest in her story, in which the Queen embarks on a space-hopping treasure hunt around Buckingham Palace to find her lost crown before her birthday party is due to start. However, before she consigned it to the bottom drawer, Kate sent a copy to the Queen herself, apologising because she was unable to present it to her in proper book form. She was stunned to get a letter back from one of her ladies in waiting, which hailed the story ‘splendid’ and thanked her for the care she took in composing the piece”

Meet the world’s most un-PC police force in Mexico, where you have to be ‘young, female and pretty’ to join: “‘The residents of this town are a horny bunch’, says Acapulco’s police chief Manuel Flores, the creator of Mexico’s first all-female police force. ‘You wouldn’t believe how docile a dangerous driver becomes after being pulled over by a sexy girl’. He is the ‘proud’ pioneer of a police unit that boasts it is the sexiest in the world, and where the official criteria for a job is simply that you are ‘young, female and pretty’. The unashamedly sexist move by Mexico’s force is extraordinary in 2016, but it represents a desperate move by authorities against the gang wars that have blighted Acapulco’s image and tourist numbers. The Tourist Assistance Brigade, a handcuff-toting arm of the municipal police, was created last October and is dedicated to keeping the visitors happy.”
