Odd news from around the world

‘Happy Birthday To You’ will soon be free to use by all “The world’s most popular song ‘Happy Birthday To You’ will soon be free to use as Warner/Chappel Music has agreed to surrender its copyright in a $14 million lawsuit. It comes three years after a group of filmmakers sued the music firm, claiming the song is so prevalent it should be in the public domain. Finally on Monday, a settlement was presented to a federal court in Los Angeles that would see Warner compensate everyone who paid licensing fees to use the song – reaching a total of $14 million. The settlement will have to be approved by the court in a hearing which is scheduled for March 14. Once approved, the song will be in the public domain. In September, Chief U.S. District Judge George King ruled that Warner/Chappell, the music publishing arm of privately owned Warner Music Group, did not have a valid copyright claim to the song’s lyrics.”

Birds of prey are starting fires DELIBERATELY: “At least two birds of prey – black kites and the brown falcon – swoop on burning twigs and embers and carry them to unburnt parts of the bush where they are thought to deliberately start bushfires, according to witnesses. They then capture large insects, frogs and animals rushing to escape. Researchers believe the raptors may be a ‘third force’ capable of starting bush fires – the others being man and lightning strikes. Bob Gosford, a lawyer who works with indigenous peoples, and Mark Bonta, a scientist from Penn State have compiled a study of reports of flames jumping fire breaks, which have occurred because of the intervention of wild birds. Mr Gosford told the IFL Science website: ‘Reptiles, frogs and insects rush out from the fire, and there are birds that wait in front, right at the foot of the fire, waiting to catch them. The researchers found numerous accounts from Aborigines, several firefighters as well as 14 Bush rangers who reported birds carrying burning sticks. Both brown falcons and black kites are widespread in Australia.”

Big Australian lizard eats venomous tiger snake for lunch: “A HIGHLY venomous snake hasn’t deterred one large WA lizard from its lunch, with the southern heath monitor deciding a deadly tiger snake would make a good meal. Department of Parks and Wildlife officer Janine Liddelow photographed the reptile shortly after it had killed the venomous snake, near Walpole in the state’s south. Growing up to 1.5m, the southern heath monitor will eat small mammals, eggs and birds as well as other reptiles.

Would YOU eat a three year old pizza?: “Pizza is a favourite food among Americas and it is also the number one request among soldiers in the US Military. Soldiers have been asking for this staple in their rations for the past 30 years, but due to a short shelf life that request has gone unanswered – until now. Researchers have created a ready-made pizza that stays fresh for three years, simply by stopping bacteria from forming on it. With Hurdle technology, researchers create a series of ‘barriers’ that stop bacteria from forming on the pizza over the years. This also controls sauce acidity, water, oxygen in the package and proper layering of ingredients. ‘It’s a fully assembled and baked piece of pizza in one package,’ Lauren Oleksyk, a food technologist at the US Army’s Natick Soldier Research, Development, and Engineering Center, told Tech Insider. In 2017, soldiers will open MRE #37 and enjoy a slice of pizza that Oleksyk says tastes like ‘day after pizza’.”

Real live Barbie seeks love: “Meet the living ‘Barbie princess’ who says her human doll-like looks are ruining her love life. She may not be blonde but Hannah Gregory, 22, from Skegby, Nottinghamshire, boasts the same seemingly impossible body proportions and perfectly symmetrical facial features as a Barbie doll. She has a tiny 22-inch waist and wears contact lenses that mimic the wide-eyed doll’s glassy stare. However, the Sheffield University student claims she is regularly criticised by passers-by in the street and can’t find a man who is interested in her personality. Hannah said: ‘When I leave the house, people laugh and shout rude comments at me. ‘It’s hard to find a boyfriend too. Often, guys will become infatuated with my appearance and tell me how much they like me. ‘But they’re not interested in getting to know my personality – they just see me as a doll. ‘But the abuse doesn’t bother me, I feel happy and cute as a doll.”
