Odd news from around the world

Suspected burglar hiding from police taken by alligator: “A suspected burglar hid from pursuing police officers on the edge of Barefoot Bay in Brevard County, Florida, and was taken by the over three metres-long ‘gator. Matthew Riggins, 22, of the nearby city of Palm Bay, called his girlfriend and told her he had broken into homes and was being chased by officers who had dogs but had found somewhere safe to hide. “He probably went into the lake to hide from the officers and the dog, and came across that ‘gator,” Major Tod Goodyear of Brevard County Sheriff’s Office told Bay News 9. Riggins body was found in the lake 10 days later. As deputies tried to pull his body from the water, they encountered the aggressive 3.4 metre-long alligator. After the alligator was euthanized by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, forensic investigators found the burglary suspect’s hand and foot inside the reptile’s stomach”

Iris the cattle dog pup in a hole lot of trouble: “CURIOSITY might have killed the cat but it was Iris the pup’s insatiable desire to chase her feline friends that left her up to her neck in trouble at her Sydney home. Mother-of-six Julie Craig said she went outside to take her son’s combined birthday and Christmas present — Iris the cattle dog — for a walk when she discovered it trapped by the head through a missing half brick in a wall of the family’s Willmot house. Ms Craig said the otherwise happy and playful pup had a love of chasing the family’s four cats. “The cats use that (area under the house) as a refuge,’’ she said.Ms Craig called the RSPCA which managed to free Iris by removing the wooden framing to an old airconditioning unit adjacent to the missing half brick.

Mislaid jumbo jets: “Malaysian authorities have taken out a newspaper advert to find the owner or owners of three jumbo jets that have apparently been abandoned at the country’s main international airport. Officials were forced to take the unusual step after growing tired of seeing the unclaimed Boeing 747-200F planes sitting idle on the tarmac at Kuala Lumpur International Airport for more than a year. They warned that the double-decker planes will be auctioned or sold for scrap if they are not claimed within 14 days. According to the advert posted in yesterday’s Star newspaper, Malaysia Airports has been unable to identify the owner or owners of the jumbo jets. According to online searches of the plane’s registration numbers, TF-ARM, TF-ARN, and TF-ARH, the aircraft belong to Air Atlanta Icelandic. However, the company told CNN it no longer owns the planes after selling them in 2008.

The drinks are on me! Rolls-Royce releases a limited edition £26,000 cocktail-making hamper that costs more than a BMW: “Feeling parched? Want to whip up a quick cocktail? This hand-built hamper has everything you’ll need to mix up your own drink, but it will cost you more than a BMW 3 Series. That’s because this is the Rolls-Royce of cocktail hampers, created by the luxury car maker themselves. And if you’re thinking about getting someone a last-minute stocking filler, you better move fast — only 15 will be made. The price: £26,366. Each glass tumbler has a platinum rim. According to Rolls-Royce, the hamper itself takes eight weeks to make and is meticulously hand-crafted from American walnut wood and the same leather with which the manufacturer adorns its car interiors. Before piecing together the set, the Goodwood-based brand consulted with experts from Dorchester Collection’s London Hotels to ensure the hamper was kitted out with everything you’d need to stir-up your own cocktail.”

Heartbreaking moment a police officer comforts his dying patrol horse after it was spooked and hit by a truck: “It’s a heart-wrenching photo of a police officer losing his partner and friend. Charlotte was a six-year-old mounted patrol horse who had worked with the Houston Police Department for the last four years. But on December 3 she was hit by cement truck and fatally injured. Her rider, Officer D. Herrejon, was bucked but refused to leave her side as she lay dying on the sidewalk, WTSP reported. The Houston Police Department posted a photo of the devastated officer resting his head on hers in her final moments. While the incident is under investigation, police say the driver of the truck is not believed to be at fault. A vet was called to the scene to euthanize Charlotte after her back legs were severely injured, said department spokeswoman Jodi Silva. The department said the horse became spooked by traffic before being struck by the truck.”
