Odd news from around the world

Long snake: “This giant snake could certainly be the next contender for Australia’s longest python. The terrifying reptile discovered on the Sunshine Coast is believed to be the longest ever found in the area, measuring more than three metres. Snake catcher Richie Gilbert, from Queensland, shared an incredible photograph to his Facebook page after the carpet python stopped a group of trail bike riders in their tracks. And despite not knowing the specific length of the creature, Mr Gilbert said the longest python he has ever caught during his career on the Sunshine Coast was just over three metres. ‘I’m not going to guess at its length as its too hard to tell from this photo but I will say that the longest python I have caught was 3.1m and I reckon this one would be longer than that!’ he said. Carpet pythons can grow between two to four metres in length and weigh up to 15 kilograms.

Pretty kitten rescued: “Rachel Bjork of Seattle was walking her dog when her pet took a sudden interest in a cardboard box lying on the ground. Intrigued, the woman opened the flap on the box and to her surprise found a tiny orange and white kitten cowering inside. On the flap, scrawled in a child’s handwriting, a note read: ‘My mommy’s boyfriend is mean to me. Desperet for loving home. [sic]’ It’s unclear the age of the writer or whether it was a little boy or little girl that put the tiny creature out in the box, but the kitten was just shy of two months old when Rachel found it. She quickly took it to a vet to be checked. After being informed that the kitten was on thin side but otherwise healthy, she took it to the MEOW Cat Rescue in nearby Kirkland for help – and they were more than happy to take her on. ‘We are so happy to have her. We have more questions than answers, but are forever thankful for the bravery of the child who knew the kitten deserved better and the kindness of the woman who saved the kitten.’”

Cat hates music: “This hilarious footage, which is believed to have been filmed in Russia, shows a cat attacking its owner while playing the flute. Sitting crossed-legged on the floor, the woman held the instrument to her lips and began to play a tune. Suddenly the cat wanders into the frame and after briefly looking up at its owner makes a beeline for her arm. The cat sinks its teeth into her skin. The woman pulls her hand away screaming and the cat follows it through the air while clutching onto it with its claws. Its brave owner then picks up her flute and begins playing once again but the cat returns with a vengeance. Clutching onto its owner’s arm it bites down and causes her to scream before lunging forward and biting the bottom of her jeans. Later the woman began playing again but the feline attacked her once more and bit the end of her trousers. The video concluded with the woman trying to play a tune one last time and the cat stopping her before she could even bring the instrument to her lips”

Director confirms Aladdin fan theory is actually true: “IT’S been 23 years since Aladdin was released, and only now has a popular fan theory about the movie been confirmed. In case it’s been a while since you’ve seen the film, let us refresh your memory about a character known as ‘the peddler’. He appears at the very start of the movie and sets up the story by saying, “It begins on a dark night, where a dark man waits with a dark purpose”. For years, fans have been debating the true identity of the peddler, with some claiming it’s actually the Genie in disguise. And it turns out they’re 100 per cent right. “That’s true!” said director Ron Clements to E! News. “That was the whole intention, originally. We even had that at the end of the movie, where he would reveal himself to be the Genie, and of course Robin (Williams) did the voice of the peddler. Just through story changes and some editing, we lost the reveal at the end. So, that’s an urban legend that actually is true.”

From Fascism to fashion: Fendi moves into Mussolini’s former masterpiece: “It was built as the centrepiece of Mussolini’s new Roman empire, a symbol of deluded grandeur that was abandoned during the Second World War and has lain empty ever since. Now a striking Fascist building that Italians call “the Square Colosseum” has been given a new lease of life as the global headquarters of Fendi, the fashion company. The firm has spent millions of dollars renovating the building, in the latest example of private corporations stepping in to save Italy’s crumbling cultural heritage. With its solid shape and symmetrical rows of arches, it imitates the form of the ancient Roman amphitheatre, but in a sleek, rationalist style. Known officially as the Palazzo della Civilta Italiana, or the Palace of Italian Civilisation, it was built under “Il Duce” as the main focus of EUR, a new town on the outskirts of Rome conceived at the height of Fascist rule in the Thirties.”
