Samurai slices a 100MPH baseball in half with just milliseconds to react: “This is the amazing moment a modern-day samurai slices a 100mph baseball in half with his sword. Japanese swordsman Isao Machii was stood just 30 feet away from the pitching machine, giving him just milliseconds to react. He takes a couple of pitches to line up his swing and then unsheathes his sword in the blink of an eye to cut clean through the third one. Footage of the stunt, posted on YouTube, shows the speed gun clocked the pitch at 161kmh (100mph). It then closes in on the remains of the ball, which appears to been sliced almost exactly in half. Mr Machii has previously made headlines after cutting through a shrimp travelling at 80mph and duelling a robot.
Outraged Italians as Starbucks to open there: “Outraged Italians are calling for a boycott of Starbucks after it emerged the US caffeine giant is planning to bring its American-style coffee houses to the home of the espresso. Taking coffee to Italy is a business strategy akin to selling ice to Eskimos. But Starbucks plans to challenge the time-honoured commercial mantra – and is in the final stages of negotiations to open their first outpost next year, Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported. Italian shopping mall entrepreneur Antonio Percassi who has overseen the expansion of Zara and Victoria’s Secret in Italy, is reportedly advising Starbucks founder Howard Schultz on the creation of a unique formula, with strong wifi expected to entice customers over from traditional coffee bars. Domino’s, the world’s biggest pizza-maker, launched in Milan last week taking advantage of the lack of pizza delivery services in Italy. But in a country that takes its coffee seriously the American chain is likely to attract fierce opposition.”
Brains and beauty: ‘Goddess teacher’ becomes internet sensation in China: “A young academic has risen to stardom after photographs of her using gym equipment and cycling sparked viral shares on Chinese social media. The woman, named as Xu Dongxiang, is thought to be an acting teacher in Dalian Polytechnic University, reported People’s Daily Online. As a part-time model, Ms Xu, 23, has been dubbed a ‘goddess teacher’ by the Chinese online community and has more than 260,000 followers on Weibo, the Chinese equivalent to Twitter. She showed off her toned body in the gym and cycling in tight fitting sportswear in the latest set of photographs. Ms Xu is reportedly a graduate from the Nanjing University of the Arts. Other than her teaching career, Ms Xu has also been a fitness guru, says Sina in the same article.”
Pink grass a hit in China: “Fields of pink grass imported into China have become the newest craze for joggers, cyclists and photographers after they burst into colour this autumn. Muhlenbergia capillaris – commonly known as the hairawn muhly – is a native to North America. It often grows along the sides of roads where its leaves, which turn copper coloured in the autumn, creating these spectacular images. Joggers and cyclists have also been taking detours to pass by the pink fields, while photographers have chosen them to capture some stand-out pictures of their subjects. Many places in China have adopted the muhly with these pictures taken alongside the Zhulu Highway in the eastern Chinese city of Shanghai. Locals have become enchanted by the soft, pink grass, which has now become a popular tourist site.
Woman on drug high filmed during rampage at Subway store: “A WOMAN who police believe was high on synthetic marijuana walked into a Subway store, stripped naked, and started “breaking everything she could find”. Nikki Abrell, 35, went into the Subway store in Anchorage, Alaska, on Tuesday and immediately went into the toilet. She emerged two hours later completely naked — but that was only the start of the strange and destructive behaviour. Police allege Ms Abrell began removing ceiling tiles, throwing food and breaking furniture, Sergeant Shaun Henry told KTVA.com. “She disrobed, went fully nude and kinda just went nuts,” he added. “destroyed the store, knocked over computers, ripped the ceiling down, sprayed a fire extinguisher all over, locked herself in the bathroom for awhile, broke just about everything you could find.” Ms Abrell was arrested at the scene and charged her with third-degree criminal mischief, harassment and resisting arrest, reported The New York Post.”
