THE NEWS

Odd news from around the world

British cops are mocked after issuing urgent appeal for witnesses to help them find a stolen BEACH TOWEL: “A police force has been openly mocked on Facebook after it posted an appeal for witnesses regarding the theft of a beach towel. The appeal, posted by Northumbria Police on the social media site on Thursday, has received criticism from hundreds of people, asking if it was a joke. The post also received more than 1,000 shares, 300 ‘likes’ and 600 comments, with users complaining that the force should be concentrating on ‘serious crimes’. A number of people mentioned personal attacks, thefts and anti-social behaviour they thought the police should deal with instead. The appeal read: ‘Police are appealing for witnesses following the theft of a towel from a North Tyneside beach. ‘It happened on Sunday, July 12 from 4pm to 5pm at Tynemouth Longsands beach. A dark blue towel with ‘dry robe’ written on the front in red and white was stolen.'”

Couples who marry after the age of 32 are more likely to DIVORCE – and those odds will get worse every year: “People who wait until after their early 30s to get married are far more likely to end up getting a divorce. The shocking news comes as a result of new research conducted by Nicholas Wolfinger, a sociologist at the University of Utah, who analyzed data from the National Survey of Family Growth in order to best determine what age people face the greatest risk of divorce. According to him, the chances of your marriage ending divorce are greatly reduced if you marry in your mid- to late- twenties, however as soon as you hit the age of 32, the odds swing the other way, with the risk of divorce increasing by more than five per cent every year. ‘My data analysis shows that prior to age 32 or so, each additional year of age at marriage reduces the odds of divorce by 11 percent,” Mr Wolfinger explained in his report. ‘However, after that the odds of divorce increase by 5 per cent per year.’

Charge your phone with a CANDLE: Device uses flame to produce electricity during power cuts: “A device that can charge your mobile phone using the heat produced by a candle has been developed to help keep people connected during blackouts. The Candle Charger uses a thermoelectric generator to convert the heat from a naked flame into around 2.5 Watts of energy. The developers say it can be used to charge portable devices such as mobile phones, cameras and other portable devices through a USB port. To use the device, a pot which has a thermoelectric generator installed on the bottom is filled with water and then a candle or burner is placed underneath. This can provide energy for up to six hours, they claim, which is enough to charge two iPhones. The device has been developed by San Francisco based Stower, who have previously developed a portable thermoelectric charger which can be used with camping stoves or campfires. They are now seeking support on the crowdfunding site Kickstarter to develop the Candle Charger for use indoors rather than beside the campfire.”

The secret swimming pools of Paris’ catacombs: “With temperatures soaring in Paris over the past month, it’s been a struggle for many residents to keep cool. But far beneath the scorching pavements, the city’s hidden swimming pools are proving to be more popular than ever thanks to a group that has lifted the veil on the French capital’s best-kept secret. Parisian explorers, known locally as ‘cataphiles,’ have long risked arrest and ventured into the city’s underworld to experience the crystal clear waters of these fascinating pools. Alexander J.E. Bradley, an Australian expat in Paris, went down below with a camera to capture stunning images of the pools. Along with his troupe of fellow urban explorers, Bradley photographed the often-flooded century-old tunnels, which have been a summer playground for more than 30 years, says Messy Nessy Chic.

Road rage driver (above) picks the wrong victim: “A driver man is facing several criminal charges, after an attack on a motorcyclist in Yuma, Arizona, that was captured on the victim’s helmet camera. The footage shows driver Lee Schismenos getting out of his car, punching motorcyclist Cody Munoz and shoving Luisa Loy, 21, who was a passenger. According to ABC News, the video was captured by a camera mounted on Munoz’s head. Munoz is seen grabbing Schismenos and pinning him to the floor, before asking for help. Schismenos was injured in the altercation and briefly hospitalized.”
