Odd news from around the world

Swedish artist decorates snail shells: “A Swedish artist has spent hours painstakingly creating minuscule works of art – on snails’ shells. Stefan Siverud was so concerned about the creatures getting crushed in his garden, he decided to paint more than 70 of them with bright colours. Tiny lighthouses, crowns and company logos are among his intricate designs. ‘As I moved on to more and more advanced patterns, I bought fresh paint and proper brushes. Once painted, the snails were photographed and released in the town park.’ ‘In total, I finished over 70 snails over the course of two summer seasons. Another 20 or so were not finished before the winter cold started setting in. ‘Those were released into my own garden in time for them to find a place to hibernate.’ Mr Siverud found about a third of those he released in his garden the following summer, with one or two showing up two summers in a row. ‘Some of those found again were finished, others not,’ he added. ‘I haven’t asked the neighbours if they found any, but I assume that’s were some of the others went.’

Goat versus bull: “In a video that captured the epic David and Goliath battle, the tiny animal is seen confronting the huge creature on the side of the road. The courageous goat is seen forcing the bull backwards before being thrown back by a couple of forceful blows from the bull. Refusing to back down, the grey and white goat comes back with a vengeance and continues its onslaught. And proving that size really doesn’t matter, it is the bull who eventually surrenders and timidly shuffles away with its tail between its legs. Although it is not known exactly where the minute-long clip was filmed, it is thought to be in India, where bulls and cows are revered by the country’s vast Hindu population. As the pair continue their struggle, several men in the background appear unperturbed by the battle unfolding before them. But viewers online were more impressed, with one commenting: ‘It’s not the size of the goat in the fight it’s the size of the fight in the goat!’

Egotistical Hispanic goes to jail: “A man convicted of having sex with his girlfriend on a Florida beach in front of children was sentenced to two and a half years in prison Monday. Jose Caballero, 40, and Elissa Alvarez, 21, were found guilty in May of two counts of lewd and lascivious behavior in a case that drew international attention for the couple’s crude act. The amorous pair were videotaped having intercourse on a Manatee County beach last summer in broad daylight. Witnesses testified that a 3-year-old girl saw them. Jurors listened to graphic testimony from witnesses and saw a video of Alvarez moving on top of Caballero in a sexual manner in the middle of the day while others looked on. Prosecutors say they were tougher on Caballero because he previously served eight years for cocaine trafficking. The Bradenton Herald reports the jury found them guilty after deliberating only 15 minutes. The couple had faced 15 years in prison. ‘If you think about 2:30 in the afternoon on a crowded beach. It takes a certain type of person to do that in front of children a few feet away,’ said Assistant State Attorney Anthony Dafonseca.”

Chinese town has been free from crime for 10 years despite being patrolled by just one policeman who is BLIND: “One blind policeman has managed to keep his home town in southern China crime-free for more than a decade. Pan Yong, 43, began losing his sight in 2002 after contracting glaucoma and cataracts. Today, he is only capable of sensing light. However, the resilient protector hasn’t let this stop him from fulfilling his role as the only policeman stationed at Ci Chong Police Station in Lanba, Guizhou, according to People’s Daily Online. The area has seen no criminal cases, public security cases or traffic accidents in over ten years, under the supervision of Pan. Part of his success has to be attributed to the support that he receives from his wife, Tao Hongying. The 46 year old woman is a security guard at the local railway station and assists her husband during security checks around the town everyday. Although some locals attributed Pan’s good work to karma, the brave policeman has been familiar with fighting crime from a young age as he grew up in a police station. Pan said: ‘I have a small position but I love this profession. My wife calls me a workaholic.”

Is THREE MINUTES of exercise a week enough? “Vince Graff spends 1 minute on an exercise bike three times a week. Says high intensity exercise has changed his life. Physical fitness test shows he’s now fitter than most men of his age. “Three times a week, I head to the gym, jump on an exercise bike and spend a minute – yes, 60 seconds – pedalling as hard as I can. And that’s all the exercise I ever do. It’s called high-intensity training, or HIT. It’s at the cutting edge of scientific research and is no gimmick, insist experts. Indeed, there have been more than 200 studies over the past ten years which seem to show that three minutes of intense exercise every week dramatically lessens your risk of falling victim to a long list of potentially life-limiting or fatal conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, blindness and some cancers. HIT does, however, fly in the face of official advice, which recommends we do 150 minutes’ exercise every week”
