Odd news from around the world

Man at Texas Chick-fil-A Pays $1K to Treat Diners: “A generous customer has paid $1,000 to pick up the tab for diners in dozens of vehicles at the drive-thru lanes of a West Texas fast-food restaurant. KRBC, the NBC affiliate in Abilene, reports that on Monday at 7 p.m. a man handed over the cash at a Chick-fil-A in Abilene. The man in the drive-thru lane told employees he wanted to pay for everyone behind him for as long as the cash lasted. The franchise owner, Brian LaCroix, said the cash was enough to pay for drive-thru food for people in 88 vehicles over about an hour. His actions would have many customers behind puzzled, and shocked. LaCroix said even a lady started crying after hearing about the story. “She just had an awful day,” LaCroix said. “We told her the story and she just started crying.” The anonymous gesture was buzzed around the restaurant the next day. The good deed continues to overwhelm some customers and the employees who were fortunate enough to witness him pay it forward. The donor’s identity remains unknown.”

The ‘texting gun’ that stops drivers using their mobile behind the wheel: Device detects text, phone and data signals from phones: “Texting while driving can be incredibly dangerous and in most countries it is completely outlawed. But now one company claims to have developed a ‘texting gun’ that can recognise the frequency of a text message, allowing police to fine people for doing it. This led to Virginia-based ComSonics to design a gun that can detect frequencies. The device, called the Sniffer Sleuth II, is currently in production although no release date or price has been announced yet. According to the Virginian-Pilot, it can discern the different frequencies from a text message, phone call and data transfer. It apparently uses similar technology used by cable repairmen to find where a cable is damaged, who look for transmission ‘leaks’. In addition, the device can apparently even work out which person in the car is texting, so it will not alert police to issue a fine if it spots frequencies from a passenger.

Pabst Blue Ribbon, Iconic Hipster Beer, Sold To Russians: “Pabst Blue Ribbon is defecting to Russia. The 170-year-old Milwaukee brewery known for its acronymic hipster beer announced on Thursday night that it was sold to Moscow-based Oasis Beverages, a six-year-old beer and soda firm that operates in Kazakhstan, Belarus and Ukraine. “Pabst Blue Ribbon is the quintessential American brand — it represents individualism, egalitarianism and freedom of expression — all the things that make this country great,” Eugene Kashper, the chairman of Oasis, said in a statement. “The opportunity to work with the company’s treasure trove of iconic brands, some of which I started my career selling, is a dream come true.” Kashper will serve as chief executive of the brewery, which will remain headquartered in Los Angeles. Oasis — which imports such beers as Heineken and Chimay to Russia and Ukraine — currently owns six beers in Russia and its bordering countries. It also produces apple juice, a non-alcoholic malt drink and a canned energy drink.”

Unidentified Floating Objects: “Visitors from outer space or a natural phenomena? Surfers and early morning walkers were stunned to find thousands of ‘alien eggs’ on a Sydney beach this weekend. Locals in Dee Why, on the city’s North Shore, reported seeing a large number of the strange objects which had washed ashore overnight. But rather than the green spheres being something from another planet, scientists explained they were a type of sponge-like seaweed that forms egg shapes possibly to protect themselves from predators. Beach-goers said they’d never seen anything like it, describing the balls as ‘alien eggs, ‘alien hairballs’, Japanese moss balls and UFOs (Unidentified Floating Objects). ‘About three days ago, there were a few egg-shaped balls but then today, they were much bigger and everywhere on the beach,’ Naraweena resident Jenny Zhang told The Manly Daily. The balls are thought to be an extremely rare species of filamentous green algae.” [Nice beach too]

There’s no escape! The pocket-sized spy drone with a 360 degree camera that can fly through windows and navigate tunnels: “It can fit in a pocket, yet is nimble enough to fly through windows and even through tunnels deep underground. Researchers have unveiled a radical new spy drone they say could revolutionise search and rescue. The US Air Force has even backed the project, hoping to use the drone to look for IEDs and for surveillance mission. The tiny hexacopter measures about seven inches across when fully configured. The drone uses six rotors to keep it airborne. It has a 360 degree panoramic camera, and can operate when out of radio contact with operators. CyPhy Works, a Danvers, Massachusetts-based startup led by CEO (and iRobot co-founder) Helen Greiner will build the drone. It will initially be used in search and rescue operations in collapsed buildings, tunnels, and other confined spaces and steep grades that may be difficult for crawling robots to negotiate. ‘The market potential is one for every soldier, marine, police officer, SWAT team member, and many other jobs that expose people to danger.’
